Our cabinet process
Cabinets are handled every day, so the prep is what makes the finish last:
- Consultation and colour. Choose a colour and a sheen - gloss, satin or matte - with James.
- Remove and clean. Doors and hardware come off; every surface is degreased.
- Sand and prime. Surfaces are scuffed and primed so the paint bonds - especially on laminate.
- Paint and finish. Applied for even coverage without brush marks, corners and edges included.
- Reassemble and inspect. Doors and hardware go back on, and the area is left clean.
Paint or replace?
If the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works for you, painting gets you most of the look of new cabinets for much less money and much less disruption - and keeps the old ones out of the landfill. Replacement makes more sense when the boxes are water-damaged or you want to change the layout.
Laminate and MDF
Laminate and MDF can look as good as wood when they are painted properly. The difference is the primer: slick laminate needs a bonding primer, and the cut edges of MDF need sealing so they do not swell or show texture through the finish.
